Meeting DENR effluent standards: a checklist

What to monitor, document, and report so your STP keeps you on the right side of compliance.

DENR Administrative Order 2016-08 sets the effluent quality standards every STP operator in the Philippines must meet. Compliance is not just about treatment performance — it is also about documentation and reporting.

Parameters to monitor

BOD, COD, TSS, oil & grease, pH, color, surfactants, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, and fecal coliform. The exact limits depend on the receiving water body classification (Class A through SD).

Sampling frequency

Most facilities are required to sample monthly or quarterly through a DENR-accredited laboratory. Keep results on file for at least 5 years and submit Self-Monitoring Reports (SMR) on schedule.

Stay audit-ready

Maintain logs of flow, chemical usage, sludge hauling manifests, and any operational upsets. A well-documented operations binder makes inspections fast and shows the regulator you are serious about compliance.
